Training
Understanding Internal Power/Neigong Through Waving Hands
As part of the jibengong 基本功, or basic exercises, waving hands is a fundamental part of the Zhong Xin Dao I Liq Chuan training process.
As students refine and deepen their practice, waving hands follows a natural progression of structure, relaxation and energy; it becomes a form of neigong 內功, cultivating an unusual, or “hidden” type of strength or power often referred to as neijin 內勁 “internal power”, or anjin 暗勁 “hidden power” in Chinese martial arts, or aiki 合氣 in Japanese arts like Aikdo.
This internal power allowed many of the old masters to retain the ability to defend themselves well into old age. Traditionally the secrets of training internal power were reserved for a single chosen successor, or even taken to the grave.
In this workshop, world renowned master Prof. Em. Sam FS Chin shares these secrets openly, revealing the training process that can truly take your martial arts practice to the next level.
Here are a few things we will cover this weekend:
- recognizing the loop
- recognizing the center and the circumference
- separation and unification
- primordial energy – balance of six directions
- Heng-Ha 哼哈; coordinating the breath and movement (read more about heng-ha in our wiki)

About
Master Sam F.S. Chin is the co-founder of the art, and the current gate keeper of the system.
Master Sam Chin trained martial arts since childhood by his father – the founder of I Liq Chuan, Chin Lik Keong. During the 1980’s, Master Sam Chin won numerous competitions, as well as the state heavy weight kickboxing championships of Selangor (Malaysia) in 1978. He was also recognized by the USA Wushu Kung-Fu Federation as a Hall of Fame Outstanding Master.
