I Liq Chuan students Dr.Nancy Watterson and Lan Tran used this past semester to launch 2 academic full-credit courses featuring I Liq Chuan as a method of learning about learning. The interdisciplinary seminars (one offered to undergraduates at Cabrini College, the other to graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania) aimed to further ways of thinking about how people learn, about how people move, and about how to be more aware in everyday life.

Congratulations Willa Sio, (10yrs) and Sofia Zigouras (7yrs)!! On May 11th, 2015, they became the first students to successfully pass their Children’s Level 1 test in the U.S.!! We are very proud of all of their hard work to build this skill and wish their continued success in I Liq Chuan!

I missed the President's Day Intensive this year because it was so close to me moving back to New York, but now that I'm living in the state, I'm just a short train ride away from Sifu's house so I was definitely in attendance for the Instructors Intensive! Taking the train is a great way to make the trip, although I hit two hours worth of delays on the ride home, which made for a REALLY long day.

He has won championships in T'ai Chi push-hands and kick-boxing tournaments, and is the Chief instructor of the system in U.S.A. Prior to his arrival in U.S. seven years ago Sam had taught for 16 years in Malaysia and Australia. He currently holds classes in Kent,NY at Chuang Yen Monastery and in New York City.

From time to time I get the privilege of answering questions about our material from students around the world.  Recently I received a question via email from Peter in Australia regarding some questions about the basic exercises and our stance, so I put together this infographic that shows the key pointers I try to teach about placement and weighting of our basic stance. Please note that the illustration below shows a figure in wuji posture because I wanted to use as neutral a posture as possible to emphasis the placement and weighting of the feet. Of course, the hands should be up for fighting positions and postures.

Sifu Says - Meditation

Off The Mats - How To Practice Nauli Kriya

This weeks post is a vlog from my YouTube channel discussing the yoga practice of Nauli Kriya.

Obviously, Nauli is not a part of I Liq Chuan, but I became interested in the practice as part of my exploration of using and controlling the diaphragm, having a better functional understanding of some of the deeper postural muscles and trying to resolve some core dysfunction I've been struggling with for some time.

From a health perspective, practicing Nauli provides a nice massage to the internal organs, and from a martial perspective, as I mention in the video, simply having the ability to fire a given muscle at will helps ensure that your stability isn't being compromised by poor neuromuscular activation / coordination.

#100DaysOfMeditation Challenge

For this weeks blog post I'm resurrecting and old video from my YouTube channel. A lot of people have resonded well to this 100 Days Of Meditation "challenge" in the past, and I'm currently revisiting it myself to once again take my own personal practice to a deeper level.

If you're like many other I Liq Chuan students, and already meditate daily, GREAT!

Use the opportunity to take your practice to another level.  Commit to 100 days of sitting for a minimum time, 20, 30 or 40 minutes, something longer than your usual level, or focus on something, like mettabhavana (culivation of compassion and loving kindness) in particular that you know needs improvement in your practice, then join me and others on Twitter and let us know how it's going for you.
