Hello to all.

Please give me your opinion/understanding/the way you've been taught of the following Point from the new System Guide (p. 14 - Points to practice in spinning and sticky hands training) -

4 Offense and Defense as One - One movement can be offense and defense by changing the contact point of energy from offense to defense or defense to offense. (Changing Yin and Yang on Point of Contact)

offense and defense

The way I understand it is that your engagement to either the yin or the yang dictates what you can do (attack-defend, open-close, etc).  The same movement can have different effects depending on whether you are engaging your opponent's yin or yang.  For example, engaging to the yang may be used to either close your opponent or direct force into his structure.  The same movement engaged to the yin will be used to open your opponent and slip past his sphere of defense to attack.

Maybe someone else will chime in with an answer.  I hadn't pondered that point much until your post.  I just assumed that maintaining your defense while attacking, or counter-attacking within defense was a good idea.  But now that I read the point more carefully, I see there's more nuance.

silmutaneous attack and defense

Hello!

I am a Ving Tsun practicioner and I am new to ILC, if someone would be so kind as to explain in laymans terms what the concept of simultaneous attack and defense means within ILC. I know what this means in Ving Tsun, but I dont want to make any assumptions and honestly I would be happy to acquire an alternative perspective.

Thank you!

simultaneous attack and defense

Hello Bryant,

I, too, am new to ILC.  I have been exploring "Circle to Center" and "Center to Center" while remaining Neutral in relation to my partner/opponent.  I have found that, when successful, this dual projection through the partner/opponent's structure provides simultaneous attack and defense.

The "Circle to Center" projection (from the ground to the contact point and through the partner/opponent's joints to their center of mass) and the "Center to Center" projection (direct to the partner/opponent's center of mass) work together to provide both defense and offense.

These multiple vectors effectively seal the partner/opponent, preventing them from issuing force.  The moment I lose either "Circle to Center" or "Center to Center", I no longer have the simultaneous quality and am then left to "defend while attacking", having to deal with their attack while launching my own.

I am not yet at the level where I am discriminating between Yin or Yang, or using the "Tangent Force".  For now I have all of my attention on remaining Neutral while maintaining "Circle to Center" and attempting to also manifest "Center to Center" to achieve this dual-vector force.

I look forward to seeing you at the November 12-13, 2011 workshop in New Jersey.

offense as defense/simultaneous attack and defense

Thanks Joshua

Circle to center and center to center are concepts I am not yet familiar with, would you mind explaining them. I find it interesting that the objective is to control the opponents root and ability to issue force as opposed to seeking to control optimal geometric lines of attack. Although I suppose it is possible to employ both of these tactics simultaneously.

Hello Bryant,

Indeed, 3-dimensional geometry is used to neutralize incoming force and issue force.

Regarding "circle to center" and "center to center", it will take one minute to feel what it would take me to write several paragraphs that would likely be misleading.  I find that not having a shared lexicon of concepts and principles tends to very circular exchanges.

We will experience this together at the November workshop and, after experiencing it first-hand from Sam Chin, we can try to work it out together.

Have a great night,

Joshua
