How Do I Upload Files To The Site Using FTP?
It is very important that we maintain a well structured information architecture that will help organize the site and will make upgrading the site in the future a much easier process. To that end, we'd like to encourage everyone who will be involved in the process of adding to the site to begin exploring the new architecture and see what I've done.
The image galleries are being built in the content management system, so all images pertaining to them should be uploaded to the i-liqchuan.com 'import' folder in the following manner.
Login using FTP. You will automatically be put in the import folder. It's actual path on the server is /var/www/html/i-liqchuan.com/sites/default/files/images/import/.
Within the import folder there are several sub folders:
- board
- disciples
- events (like Chinese new year)
- misc
- tournaments
- workshops (and retreats)
Create a new directory using the following rules.
For example, within the workshops folder, each country has it's own folder named after the three letter abbreviation that they use for the Olympics. For the most part they're straight forward, but if your unsure about what the codes, please refer to this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IOC_country_codes
Please note that under this system England becomes GBR (great Britain).
Within each country folder, there are folders for each year using the four digit numbers for that year. Under this system, the path to a given file might look like:
/workshops/AUS/2004/DSC00375.jpg
For the USA, each state has it's own sub-folder that uses the two letter postal abbreviation, so an image for a US workshop might have this for it's path:
/workshops/USA/AZ/2004/filename.jpg
Although the actual file winds up being 6 or 7 folders deep within the site, this system should provide a clear structure that will allow for a high degree of organization as the site expands in the future, and again, allow for smoother transitions as the site expands in power (and complexity) and is upgraded again in the future.
After you've uploaded the images top the folder, you now must create a new Gallery for the images you've imported. Please see this FAQ entry.
